Izabela Wilk says that her childhood in Lublin is the genesis of her interest in the magical world. This is the source of the legend of the devil’s judgement and the devil’s paw. She does not associate the figure of the devil in her work with fear or unclean power, but with crossing the boundaries of biological and social norms. The artist believes all people contain an element of evil, but we should not fear it, but rather regard it with interest and a certain benevolence.
Although Wilk expresses herself through many creative techniques, one of her favourite media is ceramics. She values clay for its organic origin and quality. She is fascinated by the peripheries of art and things made by unprivileged people who did not have an opportunity for a formal education, whose only tools were imagination and references to the spoken word, legends and rituals. Her paintings on plates, filled with animal symbolism, are like beautiful rebuses that each person can read in their own, unique way.
