In her work, Wiktoria Walendzik examines the collective imagination arising online. The artist collects images from the web, stills from YouTube videos, social media posts, memes, and her own funny finds, which she photographs with her phone. Then she mixes and processes them, composes them into collages, and finally translates them into sculptures made of steel rods, resin, shells, polystyrene, wood, plaster, fabric or sand. This is how she develops works reminiscent of playgrounds or streetscapes, and amazing, sensual, hybrid creatures. Often tinged with eroticism, Walendzik’s sculptures become narratives of fantastic, fairytale beings, human and non-human, containing evocations of our fears and desires.
“The Bear” is part of the artist’s bachelor’s diploma work in media art at the Szczecin Art Academy.
