Christianity has not yet reached Poland. Two shamans stroll through the Slavic land, tending fruit trees and bushes. The women bear no features easily assigning them to any culture or nationality. Through them, Slavic mythology, intensely explored by the artist, acquires a universal dimension.
Julia Woronowicz loves to create her own worlds and reinterpret the canon in a way that excludes no one. In her latest painting, the sisterly community is founded on the ancient ritual of peeling tangerines. These are the same tangerines that modern turbo-patriots have included in the list of traditional Christmas dishes, along with jellied carp and borscht with dumplings. In this richly decorated universe, Woronowicz’s own biography is intertwined with mythology.
